In The People are Not One Daniel Tutt and C. Derick Varn offer a sustained criticism of left (and right) populism, post-Marxism and Democratic Party politics. Through their criticism, they work towards a positive politics by thinking through the material conditions and class antagonisms of our current moment. For the authors, we must re-center class and class struggle as the focal points in building a mass working-class socialist movement. They write that "a viable socialist strategy after left populism must confront three core obstacles: the enduring dominance of liberal ideology, the fragmentation of working-class solidarity under bourgeois and racial divisions, and the complexities of building an internationalist, anti-imperialist movement."
