Join fellow socialists in organizing and strategizing to build power for organized labor in Buffalo. Socialists all over Buffalo are in unions and organizing their workplaces, and part of our mission is to connect them with each other, as well as educational resources, and support for local labor fights.

In The People are Not One Daniel Tutt and C. Derick Varn offer a sustained criticism of left (and right) populism, post-Marxism and Democratic Party politics. Through their criticism, they work towards a positive politics by thinking through the material conditions and class antagonisms of our current moment. For the authors, we must re-center class and class struggle as the focal points in building a mass working-class socialist movement. They write that "a viable socialist strategy after left populism must confront three core obstacles: the enduring dominance of liberal ideology, the fragmentation of working-class solidarity under bourgeois and racial divisions, and the complexities of building an internationalist, anti-imperialist movement." The Buffalo DSA Labor Committee invites you to our reading group on US history (from the 1840s through 2000s) told through the story of labor. Over five sessions we will be discussing and analyzing US labor history; each meeting will be anchored by readings from Erik Loomis’ book “A History of America in Ten Strikes”. The book is divided into 10 stories, each recounting ten critical worker strikes in US Labor history. Each session will be facilitated by one of the reading group organizers along with a co-facilitator.  If you’re new to labor organizing, curious about labor history, or interested in gaining a firmer grasp on how the struggles of the past continue to be tied to the present moment and labor struggles, this book and/or reading group will be a great fit for you.  We have given out all of our copies of the book, but it is available for borrowing through the Buffalo Public Library. Employers and insurers work together at all levels of our economy to maintain this system as the quality of American healthcare crumbles, in order to maintain their leverage. Buffalo DSA’s Healthcare Committee has organized since before the pandemic and after to combat private capital in healthcare as part of an overall socialist program. We see single-payer healthcare legislation on the state level as a local change in the political landscape which could force capital’s hand on federal Medicare for All and eventual nationalization. Please join us for these once-monthly Tuesday night meetings in which we educate and plan efforts to build a class conscious base in support of universal healthcare and socialist politics.
